Thursday Club members - please enjoy this week's note from the Editors on AI.
If someone wants to know whether AI will one day eclipse human intelligence, so that there is no intellectual human pursuit in which AI cannot do the same or better, he should simply ask himself whether he believes in human evolution. If he answers yes, then he should believe that AI will one day eclipse human intelligence.
Why are these questions - the evolution of intelligence in AI and the evolution of intelligence in humans - the same question?
Evolutionists believe that intelligence was an adaptive trait that evolved through natural selection as humans (or their ancestral species) faced challenges to survive. If a man is an evolutionist, then he can believe that AI will become as intelligent as humans are as it adapts more and more to training or as chips become more advanced; he can believe that as incremental improvements are made to its “intelligence”, it will eventually match in every way the real intelligence of humans.
